As frustrating as it is to admit and plow through on a daily basis, most recruiters do not enjoy the luxury of having full buy-in from hiring managers and execs on the recruitment process. Hiring often drops down your higher ups' to-do list, leaving you hung out to dry when it comes to growing your organization and meeting your hiring goals.

At Course Hero, this issue isn't quite such a hurdle. That's because their VP of Engineering & Design, Josh Tyler, is a firm believer that recruiting should perpetually be a top priority. Having spent time at companies who both did and did not take recruitment seriously, he's seen firsthand the difference and is now firmly in the recruiting camp. He stresses this in some detail in his new book, Building Great Software Engineering Teams: Recruiting, Hiring, and Managing Your Team from Startup to Success.

To dig in to his new book and his recruiting experience, we invited Josh to join us on the podcast for a lively discussion. In this episode, we cover:

  • How to get your higher ups to prioritize recruitment
  • Assessing candidates whose expertise is different than your own
  • The importance of value-based interviewing criteria
