HR and the Holidays: What’s Up in Recruiting in 2014

In Human Resources — by Trakstar

It’s a new year, and we here at Trakstar believe that this one is going to be just as full of change as 2013 was. The entire landscape of recruiting has made some huge changes over the last decade that have morphed recruiting into a totally different position than it used to be. It’s sort of the industry standard to have a New Years predictions post…so here we are!

New Software

This is one that we are particularly excited about, not just because that’s what we do, but also because that’s what we’re passionate about. The recruiting technologies industry is experiencing a boom right now, and we’re excited to be a part of it. According to research done by Bersin by Deloitte, starting in mid-2013, almost 60% of organizations are planning to implement new HR or talent management systems . This means that it’s time for businesses to identify their talent needs, find out who will be using this new software and what they need from it.

A Renewed Emphasis on Diversity Efforts

The world is no longer black and white (pun intended). As technology, ease of communication and travel continue to make this Earth smaller and smaller, it has never been more important for companies to incorporate diversity initiatives in their recruiting practices, training programs and retention efforts. Furthering your reach for quality talent is not only easier than ever, diverse workforces are extremely beneficial in business.

Mobile Recruiting

In what has actually been a very short time, mobile recruiting has gained a lot of ground. It’s pretty common sense; we now carry out many of our everyday tasks and communications via a mobile device.

Please consider a few stats from a LinkedIn study :

-62% of passive candidates have visited a company site to learn about careers.

-45% of active candidates have applied for a job on their mobile device.

Now consider that a mere 20% of employers have a mobile optimized career site. Seems like a pretty big missed opportunity as far as recruitment efforts and the candidate experience goes.

Recruitment Marketing

We have all heard a lot about it, now it’s time to give it a try…or get left behind. The parallels between recruiting and marketing have been staring us in the face for quite some time now. The emphasis on social recruiting, candidate analytics, figuring out how to effectively use big data and a myriad of other market-minded practices are now a solid part of recruiting. It’s time to start getting Mad Men with recruiting efforts (martinis at work are optional).

Buff Up Training

Companies are going to find themselves short on the talent and skills that they actually need. While the proper recruitment efforts will be part of the solution, companies will need to get serious about their formal training efforts. If the skills aren’t there, be prepared to train for them. This tactic will not only make for a more skilled workforce, it will attract talent that wants to learn and grow (which are exactly the workers that companies want).

Culture and Brand

Yes, 2013 was the year of talking and blogging about the company culture and employer brand. 2014 will be the year of building them up. They aren’t one in the same, but they are closely related. They both run on the established values of the company, they must both be implemented with a plan, and they both take a conscious team effort to be effective. It has become increasingly apparent that a stand out culture and brand are what it is going to take to attract and retain quality talent.

We’ve seen these trends before. They’re nothing new, but it’s important to know that they aren’t going away anytime soon. The direction that recruiting is taking is full of new tools, technologies and tactics. Where do you see recruiting going in the New Year? We’d love to know.
