As a suburban Dad in his fifties, I get that young-again feeling whenever I have a chance to go downtown and stroll along Nicolet Avenue or check out the latest bohemian shops in Dinkytown near the University of Minnesota campus. One such time a few years back I went to an event at the university put on by the Genocide and Holocaust Studies department, a poetry-reading by a noted Armenian, Peter Balakian, author of Black Dog of Fate.

Last weekend, Forum One participated in CongressCamp at George Washington University. CongressCamp was an unconference focused on the Congress side of Gov 2.0. Alleging fraudulent Career Builder advertisements and bait-and-switch tactics, the Minnesota Attorney General is suing a Twin Cities based employment agency, the Arthur Group. It’s Saturday morning, and before I head out to the golf course I’m in testing a beta release of TempWorks, an internal version that is getting called 14r1. A lot of changes went into 14r1, especially infrastructure changes like a new interface layer between our business object and data access tiers. Such releases make it really important to have crackerjack software testers which I try to be.

Sarmad Abbas joined the TempWorks Team in March of 2008 and instantly fit in, with his friendly personality and easy-going manner. As a Support Center Specialist, Sarmad assists clients who are having trouble with the TempWorks system. He also makes minor enhancements to the client systems as needed. Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) held its healthcare staffing summit this last week. Jack Terrana of Tempworks and Jason Lander of StaffingRobot commented that the attendance was down but not dreadfully so and that the presentations were top notch as is usual for SIA shows. A look at the income statement from Cross Country sums up the struggle of health care staffing companies in light of the weakening economy: $200 million in loss on $730 million in revenue.

SEO heavyweights, Eric Ward and Debra Mastaler , got into it with each other over on Search Engine Land. Like chick-fights in high school this one was fun to watch. So much fun I stepped into it as well. Their fight was over something called “Directory Links”. You can buy directory links from all kinds of sources. In designing Tempworks Analytics I had to make the plunge on which IP location service to use. In the end I bought the one that was easiest to buy, IP2Location. If you do a search on IP location , you’ll get quite a screen full of results – everything from non-commercial web lookups to databases to consulting services: I allotted myself a budget of $10k for the IP location aspect of my package, not a fortune but enough you’d think to get a little attention.
