As I blogged previously , I've been at South by Southwest Interactive these past few days. For me, one of the most valuable sessions was " E.R. 2.0." The session featured a facilitated conversation about how hospitals and health care providers are using new media and social networking software to support their primary objectives — treatment, research, education and outreach, and patient-provider communication.

Community Matters, Even at SxSW

Reflections on community at SxSW. Andrew , Bill , and I just got back from the South by Southwest Interactive Festival , where we spent nearly a week drinking from the proverbial technology innovation firehose. We attended numerous panels, connected with colleagues and friends on nonprofit technology and social good, and had skillets of queso in between.

Among other things, the Directive has led to a proliferation of innovative " ideas sites " across the federal agencies. Last week the White House issued a new memorandum titled " Guidance on the Use of Challenges and Prizes to Promote Open Government " (PDF) — a further step towards citizen engagement.

Here in the Washington area, the much-beleaguered local transit agency, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (a.k.a. Metro) , has been running a sponsored message on the local NPR affiliate, WAMU. It goes something like, " announcing new buses, new routes, and a new corporate culture based on responsibility." Now I am not trying to pile onto Metro, as this is clearly copy that came out of their PR shop, but the last bit always makes me laugh.
