Three Ears Plus One: Welcome, Dawn Burke

The exciting news is that Dawn Burke is joining Three Ears Media. More on that here. But you know I have to start with a story first so keep reading if you want that part, too. If not, see you next week.

When I started writing this blog, I thought there was some formula for writing a good blog post. You can look at the old posts for yourself.

No, I will not link to them. Are you crazy?

If I’m honest, most of them sounded a lot like high school English essays (and not the good ones). Some part of me believed that you had to take this very educated tone or people wouldn’t respect you. Posts had to sound stuffy and corporate. Plain and simple? Those blogs sucked.

I loved blogs that were honest and real. Women like Jenny Lawson aka The Bloggess, Punk Rock HR, Dawn Burke. Matt Charney who was my first editor. They wrote with a compelling voice, one you could almost hear as you read along. More than connecting with you as readers, they invited you to be a friend and join the story instead of teaching 7 lame principals for Twitter.

Fast-forward several years. I still know of all these people, but now I find myself in the room with them. At a conference in Chicago, Dawn and I bumped into each other. I think she was the first to say we should talk and I did my best not to fangirl. I really do love her writing, I’m not just saying that. She’s a significant influence on how I write today and I told her as much on our first call. Thank God she didn’t run away screaming.

Instead, a call turned into an all-day meeting. An all-day session turned into a strategic plan. A strategic plan turned into another call with a question.

“What do you think of joining Three Ears?”

The rest, as they say, is history.

In the past year, Three Ears Media has grown faster than I ever could have imagined. We’ve helped companies with 100 to 100,000 employees say something that matters. That makes candidates pay attention.

Now, I have the opportunity to do that with a writer and former practitioner who I genuinely admire and respect. A person who’s going to help us write the next part of this story. I’ve never been more proud of Three Ears and what we’re going to do next.

Dawn doesn’t just write, she adds something to our expertise: training teams to leverage one thing they can’t buy sell or trade – their culture. We’re learning from each other and working together to merge our work to help customers translate their culture into something that connects with candidates and employees from the first click to the first day. I’m sure you’ll hear a lot more about that on both of our blogs.

Before I go down an utterly nerdy rabbit hole, I’ll just point you to the press release if you want to see more of what Dawn will offer.
