Need help finding diverse candidates for your open roles? I put together a quick list of Boolean String hacks to find and source diverse (BLNA) candidates online. Examples include university and colleges searches, to alumni and associations group searches, to resource nonprofits, to x-raying social networks.

1. Finding URM Engineering Programs at Colleges or Universities

(“african american” OR black OR latino OR latina OR hispanic OR “native american” OR “american indian” OR “alaska native”) engineer (colleges OR schools OR universities)

Example:

• A list to EVERY HBCU in the USA
• 15 Deans and HBCU Engineering Schools
• 302 Hispanic-Serving Institutions
• Native American College & Universities

2. Finding URM Organizations, Associations, or Societies

(“african american” OR black OR latino OR latina OR hispanic OR “native american” OR “american indian” OR “alaska native”) (organization OR association OR society)

Example:

• 15 Tech Organization Supporting African American Coders
• 11 Hispanic and Latino Organizations Everyone should know
• Hispanic Museum & Library

3. Finding ERG, Affinity & Resource groups

(Microsoft OR Google OR Facebook OR Apple) employee (affinity OR “resource group”)

Example:

• Google Affinity Groups
• Microsoft Affinity Groups
• Apple Affinity Groups

4. Finding Diverse Conferences

You can do a generic search on Google and then combined those conferences into one single search string:

(WITI or “women in” OR “grace Hopper” OR “Anita Borg” OR “girl geeks” OR “ACMW” OR SWE or “Society of women” OR WIGI OR “Digitaleve” OR Systerz OR “women Gamers” OR “The Women’s Circuit” OR “AfroTech” OR “Tech Inclusion”)

5. X-Raying Social Networks  

Search for female candidates using pronouns and X-raying specific websites

site:twitter.com inurl:members (she OR her) “software engineer”

site:facebook.com “teacher” OR “minneapolis” “to present” -posts (she or her)
