How to Ask More of Your Employees During the Holidays

From gift shopping and party prep to family gatherings and travel, the holiday season is a busy time for everyone. Between Thanksgiving and a few days after New Year’s, your employees’ calendars are packed, so keeping morale and productivity high can be tough. So, how do you ask more of your employees during these busy weeks?

Ask your employees in advance (if possible)

We know that sometimes last-minute requests are simply out of your control. However, in the case that you do have some leeway with a project deadline, let your employees know of your request as far in advance as possible. If they know the deadline ahead of time, they can coordinate finishing tasks and projects around all of their holiday festivities.

Clearly communicate your request

When you approach your employees, make sure that you are as clear and specific about your request as possible. Avoid as much back-and-forth confusion about the ask as possible. You, and your employee, especially, would not want to be in a situation where your employee would need to re-do a project or task. Employees should be able to walk away from the discussion with a firm idea of how much effort and time will be required of them to complete the project or task.

Allow employees to work from home

These days pretty much everybody has a laptop or smartphone that enables them to work remotely. If your employees do not have to be on site to work on the project or task you’re requesting, allow them to work from home. Since it is the holiday season, your employees will appreciate the opportunity to spend time with their loved ones instead of going into the office.

Show them your appreciation

Your employees are going above and beyond what is required of them so it’s important that they feel they are being recognized for their hard work. A little thanks can go a long way in the workplace so don’t forget to tell you employees, “thank you.” Take the time to write your employees notes or even give them personalized gifts to show them that you appreciate their work.

The close of the year is hectic for everyone, and although business doesn’t stop, it’s important to consider that your employees may be juggling more than usual in addition to their work. If you’re asking more from your employees during the holiday season, be respectful, be understanding, and be gracious.
