IT Jobs on the Downturn in January
The Numbers:
- IT employment decreased .01% in January aligning with the downward pressure on jobs that shows no signs of letting up
- “IT employment growth is anemic,” TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts said. “Even without factoring in global and domestic political uncertainty and the potential economic impact of the coronavirus, the ongoing talent shortage and restrictive immigration policies do not foster an environment conducive to meaningful IT job creation.” Roberts added, “Unfortunately, we do not see downward pressure on IT job growth abating in the foreseeable future.”
- Year over year, the number of IT jobs were up by just 0.08% in January, an increase of only 4,500 IT workers.
- Total IT jobs in January numbered more than 5.35 million.

Tech Roles Dominate Best Jobs List
The Numbers:
- Of the top 15 roles, 8 are in the technology space while last year there were only 6 in the top 15
- Software architect took the top spot, followed by full stack developer at number 2, and development operations engineer at number 5.

- 36% higher salaries are seen for recent business grads with master’s degrees
- For example, business administration majors in the class of 2020 with a bachelor’s degree have an average starting salary of $58,166 while those with MBAs have an average starting salary of $79,043

- For recruiters at large companies (more than 1,000 employees), time-to-hire rates for tech roles can reach 45 days
- Such recruiters have an average requisition load of 12 compared to those at smaller companies who have an average of 8
