When it comes to building a company’s culture of learning, L&D professionals may want to take a page from the United States Marine Corps’ playbook.

According to the Harvard Business Review, the Marine Corps is a shining example of how to codify your organization’s “learning philosophy.” Corps leaders created a publication, writes HBR, “which tells all Marines, from the lowest-ranking enlisted member to the commandant, that they have a professional responsibility to learn. It also lays out the necessary conditions for learning, requiring each Marine to contribute to and leverage those conditions. All Marines are told they can’t rely on a training department of some sort but instead have to define and own their roles as learners.”

Creating a clear learning philosophy, however, is not the only key to developing a successful culture of learning. HBR also highlights the importance of identifying barriers to learning and, perhaps most importantly, of being flexible in your approach and needing to recognize the different learning styles of individual employees.
