Getting ahead. It’s what companies want. It’s what employees want.

Yet even the best of businesses often don’t deliver consistently on worker advancement, according to a study sponsored by Harvard Business School’s Managing the Future of Work project and the Burning Glass Institute.

The study, outlined in the top story below of must-read articles for talent professionals, recommends three steps for companies to get career advancement right. The article adds: “To address the problem, companies may need to reframe L&D (learning and development) as R&D, and consider it a long-term investment in worker productivity human capital value.”

Elsewhere in this week’s list, see how the four-day workweek is gaining steam (woot! woot!); discover the five characteristics of effective trainers; and learn why “the big, fat man with the long white beard” may not be coming to town this year.
