30 Pronoun Education Blogs You Can Share At Work
When I present pronoun education at work, I start with a story then I share the stats. The stats that prove while trans and nonbinary existence is not a new thing, the volume of bills targeting this group most definitely is. Last year, we experienced more anti-trans legislation in the first 6 months of the year than the last 10 years. That’s not a hypothetical. That’s fact.
This year, we are experiencing the highest number of bills targeting transgender people in a single year to date. Just two months into 2023, HRC cited 340 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in state houses across the country – 150 of which specifically restrict the rights of transgender people. Even more since the last count.
We’re also witnessing a rise in blatant discrimination against nonbinary and trans people. More than 80% of nonbinary people say that identifying as who they are would hurt their job search. They have reason to be concerned, according to findings by Business.com that found people with resumes containing “they/them” pronouns were less likely to receive interviews.
Stats Tell One Story. Pronoun Education Tells Another.
I share theses stats because I don’t think people understand just how pervasive these laws or biases are. The headlines are only fueling it more. However, what I wish would fuel our knowledge is pronoun education.
Education that teaches us to support others instead of distance ourselves and our understanding of the “other” people. Education that reminds us that humans and families deserve to exist exactly as they are without government intervention. Education that reminds us that these are people who just want to be happy – at work and everywhere else.
It’s more than a one-hour presentation I can deliver at work. It’s the education that DEI, HR, recruiting, and Employee Resource Groups (ERG) provide. It’s facilitating context and content that helps people hear stories and understand the impact of evolving our own understanding on someone else’s life.
