The 10 Must-Read Articles for Recruiters This Week

Top stories of the week

In a recent blog post, industry leader Josh Bersin highlights some eye-popping statistics about the current labor market in the United States:

  • There are nearly 17 million open positions in the U.S. today, which translates roughly to almost 1 in 9 of all jobs in the country sitting vacant
  • Surveys from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that that close to one-third of the U.S. workforce will leave their jobs in 2022, leading to 4 million people quitting every month

So what’s happening here? Josh sees this dramatic shift in the workforce as part of what he calls the “Great Migration” and a radical upheaval of the entire economy that he’s dubbed as “industry convergence.” Companies have taken their digital transformations to a whole new level at a pace that’s never been seen before, resulting in businesses — and entire industries — cutting back vast numbers of traditional jobs and instead hiring tech-savvy experts at scale.

“So that’s it,” Josh writes, “lots of jobs and not enough people, right? Should we just wait for more babies to be born and ask older people to come back to work?”

Well, not so fast. Despite this upheaval, Josh believes this shakeup is a huge opportunity for job seekers. “If you’re a job seeker,” he writes, “this is your year.” And for companies, he thinks “industry convergence is going to be your biggest challenge. It’s time to dig deep into your company’s value proposition, focus on your culture, and spend a lot more time developing and supporting your internal teams.”
