ChatGPT and recruitment marketing

Picture this - there is a free AI tool that can help you with the entire recruitment process from start to end. It not only supports in writing and improving your candidate outreach messaging, job descriptions, and recruitment marketing content but also assists in creating a persuasive language for tough hiring managers. Moreover, it generates appropriate interview questions so you can use them during interviews! And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

At the end of 2022, Amid all the festivities and planning for the new year, you may have heard of ChatGPT - an AI platform that was recently released to the public on 30th November, 2022. It has been creating quite a stir amongst tech enthusiasts ever since its launch. It's been everywhere, every corner of the eye, and you'd see or hear someone talking about how incredible ChatGPT is.

There’s a huge hype around OpenAI’s ChatGPT at the moment and a lot of mixed feelings. People are approaching it with both anxiety and excitement. Some think that it will replace Google, while some say this will reduce the need for or even replace some people in many skilled jobs (marketing, software engineering, journalist, etc.)

Initially, I was unimpressed by my simplistic tests with ChatGPT. But when I encountered the creative applications others had found for this model, it sparked my interest in the potential uses of this technology within recruiting and talent acquisition. Encouraged to be more adventurous with experimentation, my outlook on ChatGPT changed drastically!

I was surprised to learn that I could use ChatGPT to write persuasive emails, craft job descriptions and recruitment marketing content, generate appropriate and effective interview questions, increase response rates of candidate outreach messages, and more. It even has the ability to work with unrealistic hiring managers!

ChatGPT is quickly developing into a powerful tool in the recruiting world. While it’s not perfect and still requires a human touch to make sure it produces valuable output, its potential applications are exciting! In the future, it may become a crucial part of recruitment strategies around the globe.

Dialog with an unrealistic hiring manager

There's always the manager who refuses to be flexible when it comes to their expectations for an incoming employee. So I asked ChatGPT to "create a dialogue between a hiring manager with unrealistic expectations and a recruiter who is trying to explain to the hiring manager that they need to be flexible in their hiring requirements given talent and supply dynamics."

If only all unrealistic hiring managers were this easy to influence! Not bad, right?

Of course, the dialogue generated is very general, and you could take this next level by prompting it to “write a compelling argument in support of hiring managers being more flexible in their requirements and even be specific about skills, locations, diversity, etc”

The key point here is that you can use ChatGPT to address any future talks from different perspectives and get some good insights to use when the time comes.

Social media Job AD

We all know that posting a job ad on social media is one of the best ways to reach potential candidates. So I asked ChatGPT to "create a compelling job ad for an AI engineer position".

It came up with something like this:

"Are you an AI engineering enthusiast looking for an opportunity to bring your dreams and ideas to life? We are offering such an opportunity! Join our team and work on challenging projects while earning a competitive salary. You can make a real impact here - don't miss out!"

Here's another example of a Facebook ad. You can suggest how many characters to have, how many words, or even to use a specific word.

Job Description

I went forward with my little curiosity and tried to use ChatGPT to write a job description for a software engineer role within a beauty organization. I was blown away by the quality of the resulting content. Given the fact that I didn’t offer any context, it generated a pretty good job description that could easily be used by anyone. So, instead of taking me quite a lot of time to generate the job description, it took me less than a minute, and I have a pretty good job description that I can work with, improve it, and use when needed.

Writing emails to candidates

Ai tools have been around for a while now, and marketers are using them in writing emails. copy.ai, Jasper - AI Copywriter , or Rytr are only a few of them. However, there is an AI tool for almost everything now.

So, I challenged ChatGPT to write a compelling email from a technical recruiter that would get a response from a software developer that wouldn’t normally reply. We know the struggle!

Not great, not terrible! We know all the meme’s going around the internet with regard to “I hope this finds you well,” so we can ignore that intro, but overall I think it’s better than many emails I read from recruiters.

I understand that the email may not have been tailored to a specific situation, but it's important to keep in mind that it was generated based on the limited information provided. In order to create a more compelling and personalized email, it would be helpful to have more information about the specific company, industry, job requirements, and the software developer's experience and skills.

In general, I would say that the email generated above is in line with the standard of default messages typically seen. However, it is important to note that it can be further customized and tailored to the specific recipient. It's always best practice to avoid sending a generic, non-personalized message, as it may not be as effective in getting a response.

Improving Emails/Content Creation

After setting the stage, things really started to pick up steam for me. I'm about to share one example of how powerful ChatGPT can be - and it goes beyond typical recruitment scenarios; its proven utility lets you take any content from a sourcer, recruiter, or marketer and make it even better!

I know that ChatGPT can rephrase and rewrite the content, so I wanted to test if it can make an email a bit more "warm and fuzzy" to drive better reception. So, could ChatGPT improve the text of the email message to make it "warm and fuzzy?".

It successfully transformed from one tone to another in its email editing. This is especially interesting considering that this same technology could be used for far more than simply emails: job descriptions, blog posts, creating relevant interview questions, etc. are all potential applications!

With AI technology like ChatGPT revolutionizing the marketing sector, it's safe to say that recruitment efforts are next in line for a major transformation. Big changes lie ahead as this tech shakes up how companies find and attract new talent!

Interview Questions

ChatGPT also successfully created relevant interview questions for a data engineer. Here’s an example of one of the questions it wrote: “how do you troubleshoot and fix a data pipeline that is not working as expected??”

Although I provided no context to ChatGPT, it still managed to come up with a well-thought-out question that could be used in any job interview. It's impressive to see how AI can generate great quality content with so little information inputted. This level of customization is something that cannot be achieved by traditional methods and speaks volumes about the potential of AI technology.

It is still very early days for ChatGPT, and though I am extremely intrigued and excited, it has several limitations, including:

  • Lack of context: ChatGPT can generate fluent and coherent responses, but it may not always understand the context of the conversation or the background knowledge required to understand a question or statement fully.
  • Limited understanding of the world: ChatGPT is trained on a vast amount of text data, but it may not always be able to provide accurate information on specific topics or be able to understand the nuances of certain concepts.
  • Lack of common sense: ChatGPT can understand and respond to many types of questions, but it may not always be able to apply common sense reasoning or understand idiomatic expressions.
  • Bias: Like any machine learning model, ChatGPT is trained on data that reflects the biases of the society that generated it.
  • Limited creativity: ChatGPT can generate human-like text, but it's not creative like humans.
  • Lack of emotions: ChatGPT can understand and respond to many types of questions, but it does not have emotions, so it can not understand emotions.

Conclusions

Overall, ChatGPT is a great tool that has many applications across different industries and can serve as an invaluable resource with which one can work on, and improve. The fact that ChatGPT can produce such high-quality results means that recruiters will be able to save time, resources, and money by using AI-assisted software. In addition, the content generated can also be used to improve communication with candidates, which is essential in any recruitment process.

In conclusion, ChatGPT has great potential to revolutionize the recruitment industry. However, regardless of the process in which it will be involved, it will still need some human touch, a bit of human magic. Here at SmarDreamers, we are more than aware that tools like ChatGPT will be part of the daily tech stack that recruiters are going to use, but we also understand the importance of a candidate's experience, which is what makes the difference at the end of the day.
