Recruiting is a tricky business, and getting a candidate to respond can be even trickier. However, with a few hacks (especially through the holidays and new years), you can increase your chances of getting a response from the candidates you’re interested in for an open requisition.

Hacks for Increasing Your Candidate Response Rate

Here are four hacks for increasing your candidate response rate.

1. Personalized Messaging

Make sure your outreach message is personalized and relevant to the candidate. Avoid using generic templates and take the time to research their background and interests. This will show the candidate that you’re genuinely interested in them and not just sending out mass emails. Don’t forget to avoid these mistakes when it comes to crafting your messaging.

2. Quick and to the Point

Ensure sure your message is clear and concise. Avoid using jargon and technical terms that may confuse the candidate, or show that you have no idea what you’re sourcing for. Instead, use simple language to explain why you’re reaching out and what you’re looking for so they are more inclined to quickly respond.

3. Show Your Unique Qualities

As a recruiter in a passive market, you will need to offer the candidate something of value and differentiate yourself from the competition. This could be a unique opportunity, a chance to work with a great team, access to training and development programs, or get killer benefits. By highlighting the benefits of working with your company, you’ll make the candidate more interested in responding to your message.

4. Patience and Persistence

Lastly, be patient and persistent. It’s not uncommon for candidates to take some time to respond to recruitment messages, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t hear back right away. Follow up with a friendly reminder a few days later, and continue to engage with the candidate in a professional and respectful manner. If you do get an initial response and phone screen set-up, job well done. If they try to reschedule, say you will make the phone call quick. That can be one of the red flag signs that they are trying to ghost you.
