A few weeks ago, a startling article from the New York Times showed that almost 1 million mothers have left the workforce. Before the pandemic, more women were employed than men for the first time ever. Today, we’re back down to 1980s levels of women in the labor force. These grim statistics have caused some people to begin to refer to the current recession as the shecession (short for “she-recession”) because of the unequal impact it has had on women.
