Carre d'Agneau avec de l'Asperge Grillee a la Gregoire

Staffing Talk

My wif'e's down in Peru doing cleft palate surgeries with a bunch of other docs which leaves me cooking for the first time in about 12 years. Normally, as in before I was married normally, or rather before I had seven kids normally, I would have just high-tailed it down to La Belle Vie, the Twin Cities finest chef-owned French restaurant. But no, I've only got an hour to cook and eat before carting the 12-year-old off to a basketball game.

The Rules Do Apply: Navigating HR Compliance

Speaker: Ann Meyers Piccirillo

HR Compliance is like a giant game of whack-a-mole. Once you think your company is compliant with all policies and procedures documented and in place, there’s a new or amended law, regulation, or final rule that pops up landing you back at ‘start.’ There are shifts, interpretations, and balancing acts to understanding compliance changes. Keeping up is not easy and it’s very time consuming.

Suspended Japanese Staffing Company Hits Bottom

Staffing Talk

The Japanese government has 'temporarily' closed down a staffing company and sent its stock tumbling. Despite having done business in Japan for 17 years, I don't understand it much. The notion of temporarily closing down a business for several months seems odd. Once closed down, how does it ever start up again? Apparently, investors don't have a good answer for that either.

Minneapolis StarTribune: Go After the End-Clients

Staffing Talk

It's getting cold in Minneapolis, and I don't just mean the weather. The latter just went from 38F on Monday to a -40F wind chill today, one of the largest one-day temperature differentials ever recorded here. That's not as cold as it is for contractors and temporary workers at clients of bankrupt Chimes who haven't gotten paid. This story which moved from the shock to the anger stage last week is moving full steam into the grief and get-even stage.

Tom Cruise, Lap Dances, and the Difference Between Sales and Operations

Staffing Talk

Staffing company owner, are you expensing Lap Dances? I'm not trying to be moralistic here although I could, it's just a question: how long do you expect hard working operations people who actually make things happen put up with a double standard? I remember my Dad going through this epiphany when after launching Manpower's Technical Services in the 1960s he realized that his relentless effort to generate profit by reducing expense was squandered by entitlement-seeking sales staff.

Recession Fears Slam UK Staffing Stocks

UK staffing stocks fell sharply in the last three months despite strong earnings and revenue growth. Turnover (British for 'Sales') increased 38% in the 4th quarter of 2008 for Michael Page, not bad but not enough to keep its stock from falling some 50% during that same period. A robust job market has done nothing to stem the crash as the Office for National Statistics reports the fastest increase in employment in 11 years according to the Financial Times.

Muckraking blogger Dennis Howlett, [link] , details the situation. Far be it for me to rush to the defense of another software service provider, but Howlett takes a harshly anti-vendor, almost yellow-journalistic approach to almost all of his posts.
