A perfect example of HR being the new PR. TempWorks uses no PR firm, did not do an exhibit booth, but we did send in our stars to the Staffing World trade show in Orlando last week. After a day of networking with attendees, vendors and presenters, Jathan Moline, Laura Baratto, Rich Peterson, and Casey Kraus gather for some late night bonding. Today Twitter is all a flutter because someone had the audacity to write a positive blog post about HR.

[link] At Tempworks we get to talk to not a small number of consulting firms, job shops and government-financed job centers, so we get to see that yes there are some jobs that have been “created” by the “stimulus”. But what I mostly see in those jobs is money taken out of one pocket - the taxpayer’s - and put in another. The next result is of course that no jobs are created.

Yesterday investors hammered Adecco’s stock for wild spending, an event that didn’t go unnoticed by its creditor’s (FT subscription required; hat tip: Mike Dourgarian) who called into question Adecco’s long-term liquidity. Adecco dropped another several percent subsequent to my post , making the sum total rout of investor wealth $900+ million (from 36.50 to 33.30 EUR or almost 10% on a market cap of $10 billion).

My buddy and social media guru Ward Tongen chastised me today at the Unsummit in Minneapolis for talking up Twitter as the rage of the day. It’s not that he’s against Twitter – he’s quite active himself there. It’s simply that he sees Twitter much like Facebook and Yammer and others as a tool, a flavor-du-jour of micro-blogging. Twitter, um I mean micro-blogging, is taking off as the networking platform of choice for recruiters.

Bad hiring managers make life difficult for everyone. They rush about in a dither, complaining about the lack of resources, but fail to return phone calls or follow up on great candidates. They’re like the jerks that drive slowly in the left lane of the freeway who suddenly speed up when a new lane opens. They just don’t know how to work with other people.

Hat tip to the Staffing Robot for this story: According to an article by Staffing Industry Analysts , another heathcare VMS provider (vendor management system) has stiffed its medical staffing suppliers. Although not quite as lurid as the Chimes debacle in which unescrowed payment due to staffing companies were squandered in wild living , “misuse of funds” by an investment fund led to cash-flow problems at its subsidiary, a funding company.

Going back to Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock , a lot of ink has been spilled about technology overstepping itself, and Tempworks EVP Cory Hintz posted on this very subject recently as it relates to Tempworks paperless employment products. Normally, we get great reception from clients and prospects alike about our paperless strategy, but at one client that uses only our core front-back software commented that their best sales activity is delivery paychecks out to employees onsite at customers.
