Like you, I love to rip on Millennials. In the same way that, I suspect, every generation rips on the one(s) that come(s) after. “They’re different, they’re lazy, they’re spoiled, and – dammit – they’re changing things.” Or, in the case of Millennials, they’re narcissistic and entitled, love dubstep and hideous retro fashions, and have you ever even tried talking to one?

Despite the recent good news that the unemployment rate is dropping, the labor force participation rate continues to fall. Tyler Cowen has commenters blaming the ‘dismantling’ of unions. I wonder how well that jives with what those of you out there in the staffing industry are seeing? I haven’t worked a desk recently, but I do talk to execs that buy a lot of staffing, and they certainly point to other problems.

So I’ve been reporting on the staffing world for a while now – talking with industry pros, going to conferences, reading all the niche pubs, etc. – and I’ve definitely gotten a very specific vibe during the process. And that vibe is a middle school lunchroom. Not a very flattering comparison, I know, but that’s my outsider perspective, so take it for what it’s worth.

If I had to pick one word that described the staffing industry, it would have to be ‘Competitive’. Competition is what makes staffing brutal, but it is also what makes it great. The same goes for food truck business apparently. I say apparently because here in the Twin Cities there are no food trucks to speak of. We have some great markets and food stands , but trucks don’t make up an important part of our culture.

When my Dad started his temp company in 1974, it made sense that he would make tech staffing the core component of his business.
