Social Discovery Apps and the Future of Ambient Recruiting

Staffing Talk

It’s a shame that the headline scared off serious readers, but Mike Butcher’s “Recruiter’s Wet Dream” article about social discovery apps deserves attention from staffing pros. Not of course for the apps that he hypes – they were summarily dismissed by the few commenters to his article – but instead for the mere reasonableness of a future in which mobile eHarmony cum Four Square type apps make their way into the recruiting space.

It should be simple. Now it’s Workable.

Workable

Here’s a challenge: walk around a contemporary office and spot the one thing that dates back to the fifties. It’s the resumé. If it’s not sitting in a stack of papers with hundreds of its friends, it’s in your email, dutifully converted in PDF, preserving the unstructured form of its paper ancestors. Hard to decipher, even harder to compare with other resumés, each carrying the stylistic creativity of its author.

Can Staffing Software Survive Twitter’s Changing APIs

Staffing Talk

To be fair, Twitter never promised me or anyone that I’m aware of that it wouldn’t go changing its API more often than a football fan changes his fantasy roster. But they do, and that creates problems for software developers. How are we to keep up? And it’s not just mature software systems that struggle with the change, startups do too. A while back I wrote about a staffing industry startup that was not just leveraging Twitter but actually using it as its sole platform.

Feds to Consider “Safe Harbor” for Temporary Employees Under Obamacare

Staffing Talk

We’ve had a lot of discussion here on Staffing Talk about the healthcare act and its potentially dire consequences for temporary staffing agencies, customers and employees, but a lot of that has been pure speculation because of ambiguities about whether temporary employees would in fact be considered “full-time” and thus subject to shared responsibility for healthcare by their employers.

Chicago Teacher Strike: Govt Power Brokers 1, Kids 0

Staffing Talk

By almost all accounts, the teacher strike in Chicago was born out of a power struggle between a mayor and a union boss and has little to do with actual grievances of the teachers themselves nor the needs of the kids who already suffer from a 40% literacy rate. I welcome comment from anyone closer to the situation there. I’m not in Chicago but I was in New York over the weekend and got a taste of just how unions and the Left perceive themselves by going to see Newsies , one of the more acclaimed

Remembering 9/11: The Day My Daughter Was Born

Staffing Talk

As the years go by we get further and further away from the 9/11 tragedy. To put it in perspective, most 5th graders don’t remember it happening at all. Like many of you, I still remember it like it was yesterday. But probably not like one of our readers — who had her first born daughter that morning. She sent me her story (see below), but preferred to remain anonymous because she was talking about something so personal for complete strangers to read.

I Like You – You’re Promoted!

Staffing Talk

Not only are we supposed to hire people who are not like us, and may even annoy us, but the way most organizations do talent reviews is working against them. So says former Google CIO Douglas Merrill. In this piece I detail the case Merrill makes for diversity in the hiring process. But he also says a lack of diversity in the hiring process also shows up in – and bastardizes – the way we evaluate and develop our human capital. “Every HR department in the world has a talent revi
