A Sanitation Worker’s responsibilities include disposing of hazardous waste correctly and ensuring that there is no garbage left on the streets or natural areas.

Ultimately, you will take the garbage to an appropriate disposal facility such as a dump or landfill at the end of each day.

Responsibilities

  • Manually collect garbage or use an automated garbage-disposal truck
  • Lift heavy objects and work in all weather conditions
  • Drive garbage trucks while others ride along
  • Operate the truck mechanisms for lifting, dumping and setting the trash cans or dumpsters down
  • Perform some manual labor for items such as brush piles or furniture that trucks can’t lift

Requirements and skills

  • Proven work experience as a Sanitation Worker or similar role
  • Knowledge of proper lifting techniques when handling heavy objects
  • Experience working with hazardous materials and knowledge of proper waste disposal methods
  • Working knowledge of GPS and online mapping sites
  • Excellent physical fitness and strength
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
