How ChatGPT May Push Talent Sourcing into a Future State

ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize talent acquisition, and its use could greatly impact multiple industries in the future. I anticipate a significant change to occur within the next 5-10 years within the sourcing field. This tool could be further developed and utilized to perform the tasks of a lead generation sourcing researcher role. Thus, this tool could change the idea of a sourcer and recruiters role more into a future state model. The idea of recruiter could change into more of a relationship focused part of the process. Instead of external outreach the role could shift to building a better candidate experience.

Originally, I blogged about the future state of sourcing back in 2018 and oddly enough, I feel that my predications we’re spot on.

GPT-3, developed by OpenAI, is a powerful language model that can generate human-like responses through text and can be tailored for various applications. It is able to understand and respond in a more human-like manner, and for commercial users, it can utilize their own data to provide less conversational and more informative responses. It is highly advanced.

Although conversational AI and chatbots have existed for a while and have been applied in various fields, ChatGPT’s advancements bring us closer to realizing their full potential shaping many industries including recruiting.

Quite shockingly, ChatGPT was used to take several human based exams and passed:

  • MBA Exam
  • The Bar Exam
  • Medical Licensing Exam

AI is able to predict assumptions and come to a conclusion. External Talent Sourcing come some day be impacted by such technology.

Many Industries Could be Impacted

It is likely that our idea of work will change in the future. Advancements in technology, changes in the global economy, and shifting societal values may all play a role in shaping the way we work. For example, the increased use of automation and artificial intelligence may lead to a shift towards more remote and flexible work arrangements, while the growing importance of sustainability and social responsibility may lead to a greater focus on purpose-driven careers. However, it is difficult to predict exactly how these changes will play out and how they will impact the workforce.

Could External Talent Sourcing Become Obsolete?

The use of ChatGPT could potentially transform the sourcing funnel model. In the future, ChatGPT could be utilized to actively source candidates within ATS/CRM systems and search externally making the manual search process obsolete. Will this happen within the next several years – I would say no. But, we are probably at the tip of the beginning of what is to come.

Recruiters & Sourcers Will Focus More on Nurturing Relationships:

AI technology will really improve our jobs. We will focus less on searching/finding leads and more time focused on building human relationships with applicants. The role of a recruiter may very well change in the next 5-10 years.

Looking Forward…

I am optimistic about the future of talent acquisition and believe that departments dedicated to this function still have value. However, I acknowledge that my perspective may be controversial and may stir up some disagreement. Despite this, I maintain that the role of recruiting will shift in the future, focusing more on developing, communicating with, and preparing candidates as the recruitment process comes to a close. I will openly accept this change and look forward to hearing more about the evolution of the talent sourcing function as a whole.

Why fight the future? I say embrace change, rethink, retool, and keep moving forward from here.
