9 THINGS THAT WILL KILL YOUR CAREER

Yup, you heard us.  There can be some serious consequences for honest mistakes you might make.  So what’s the solution? Be attentive and be in control!

1.     OVER-PROMISING AND UNDER-DELIVERING:  We all want to impress, but there’s no point creating extra pressure that could backfire.  If you make a promise and fall short, it reflects very poorly on you.  Set up realistic expectations from the beginning so you can do the same quality work in the same time frame.
2.    COMPLACENCY:  Being complacent can really kill a career.  When was the last time you learned a new skill?  If you can’t remember, it was too long ago.  Make continuous growth and development a priority!
3.    FEAR OF CHANGE:  Whether you think things should change or not doesn’t matter.  Things are changing fast these days.  Don’t resist it! You don’t have to love it, but you do have to adapt to it.
4.    HAVING AN INFLATABLE EGO:  Success is great…until you let it go to your head.  NEVER rest on your laurels-that is setting yourself up for failure.  Be humble.
5.    LOSING SIGHT OF THE BIG PICTURE:  It is easy to become so involved in work that you lost sight of the big pic.  Learn how to balance your daily priorities with your goals-this will help you keep everything in check.
6.    NEGATIVITY:  When you’re feeling down, that energy can seep out and impact others around you.  People who spread negativity make things difficult for everyone else.  Do yourself (and everyone else) a favor and stay positive.
7.    LOW EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EQ):  Of course you can be fired for being unable to play nicely with others, but you can also get yourself into a lot of hot water by having a bad poker face.  Lacking emotional intelligence can do great harm to your career.  So make sure you have an excellent poker face, and play nice with everyone.
8.    SUCKING UP TO YOUR BOSS:  Sucking up is a sneaky thing to do, and it won’t go over well with colleagues who are trying to make it by earning the boss’s favor.  Be authentic and be sincere-nothing can substitute merit.
9.    PLAYING POLITICS:  Working to create strong work relationship is different from creating conflict aka getting involved in “playing politics”.  Avoid the PP and stick to strategies you would be proud to discuss with your colleagues.

Sure, one huge misstep could ruin a career.  But so could a lot of little ones.  Be smart and keep your career thriving!
