Uncubed Approved: Ikea’s Careers Page

In this first edition of Uncubed Approved in 2023, we’re sharing our love of IKEA and the powerful employer brand the company has built with a few simple materials and an allen wrench.

What works so well on IKEA’s careers site is:

  • Its simplicity. There’s nothing elaborate about it, but IKEA’s careers site plays all the right notes. It includes the basic components of a careers site and signals that the company cares about long-term career development and the employee experience. Plus, visitors will encounter plenty of employee faces and voices.

  • Its relationship to the consumer-facing brand. The careers site branding is right in line with that of IKEA’s overall brand: that recognizable yellow and blue, simple language, minimal text, and a friendly, helpful tone. There’s no mistaking where you are.

  • Big, bright, and happy images. This site is full of faces! Never underestimate the power of high-quality non-stock photography, especially for large global companies.

On top of nailing the basics, IKEA has managed to build a pretty sophisticated employer brand.

Employer branding for both current and prospective employees

On the home page, above the banner image, IKEA calls out the expansion of its healthcare benefits to include abortion, fertility, and gender affirmation.

Note that the link to the employee portal is just above this in the top right corner. If this is where staff are directed to log in, they’re also seeing the message. It’s apparent that IKEA thinks about employer brand as it applies to both prospective and current employees.

Remember that employer branding is for retention just as much as it is for recruitment.

Check out this simple compensation package comparison tool. IKEA is aware that recruitment is a matter of competing for talent, just like selling products is a matter of competing with other market players. That tells us they’re thinking about employer branding strategically.
