What Recruiters Can Learn from 3 Super Bowl Automobile Ads

There’s a lot of water cooler conversation today on the topic of painful losses and epic wins, thanks to a nail-biter of a Super Bowl LI. But – in true Super Bowl tradition – it was the commercials that won the day. We laughed. We cried. We took notes.

Wait, what?

Allow us to explain. It costs a lot to secure an ad slot during the Super Bowl – just a gargantuan amount of money. So companies who go for it are going to communicate messages that resonate with the audience, right? That goes without saying. And the themes this year were bold, meaningful and on point.

Recruiters are in a similar business. They have to be able to leverage big, important messages that appeal to their audience: job seekers. And they have to be able to stand behind the benefits they offer their “customers,” also known as their next great hires.

And we noticed that some of the biggest automobile companies – Audi, Ford and Honda – ran commercials hinged on themes that are critical for any recruiter.

1.) Commit to Pay Equality

Did you know that 9 in 10 employees from around the globe believe men and women should be paid equally for equal work and experience? But our newest Economic Research Report, Demystifying the Gender Pay Gap, shows that the disparity between men and women’s pay still exists. Glassdoor’s Equal Pay Pledge is a way for companies to help create momentum around pay equality by telling job seekers, employees and the world about their commitment to close the gender pay gap through your equitable pay practices. Hats off to Audi who came out in a big way for pay equality. It’s not only the right thing to do, it’s in your best interest as a company. Those nine people out of every ten are talented, and if they don’t come work for your organization, they’ll go work for your competition.

Glassdoor held a Roundtable Discussion on Equal Pay Day this past April, where the panelists discussed the true cost of the gender pay gap, not just to individuals, but also to businesses. And because Glassdoor pioneered the Equal Pay Pledge, we’ve pulled together a list of 9 Companies Committed to Pay Equality who happen to be hiring now! We’ve also gathered a list of 16 Jobs that Have a Gender Pay Gap, and offered 8 things you can do about it.

2.) Stay Current

Recruiting top talent has never been more competitive, and in today’s constantly changing recruiting landscape, you can’t afford to be stuck. Stuck in your ways. Stuck in the past. Or stuck with the wrong people. Ford got it right. Just like they tackle the importance of adapting and pivoting in their industry by getting into alternative means of transportation, recruiters have to look at adapting and pivoting in theirs.

But recent research from leading analyst firm IDC, suggests many companies are misallocating their budgets, misusing social media and putting too much faith in ineffective, outdated systems. Here are the 3 Recruiting Mistakes You’re Probably Making, plus ways to work yourself out of the bind.

And – just like in that Ford’s ad spot depicts – it can be hard to break out of old patterns. Amidst the craziness of sifting through resumes, managing job listings and coordinating with hiring managers, it can be challenging to stay up on recruiting trends. That’s why pulled together the top ten most important HR and recruiting statistics, so you can have exactly the information you need to make a change right at your fingertips.

3.) See the Big Picture

Honda’s commercial with well-loved celebrities talking straight from the pages of their yearbooks about chasing dreams gets at a theme that rings true for recruiting. It’s important to remember that hiring for potential can have big benefits. You have to think big-picture, and remember to not get bogged down by focusing too hard on checking boxes.

Recruiting and the hiring process in general is one full of nuances and those nuances extend to the candidates the position draws in. The goal of any recruiter should be to look at the role holistically and to look at any potential candidates holistically. The best candidate for a role could potentially not fit the stereotypical mold for the position, but this does not mean that he or she would not excel in the day-to-day job.

A holistic approach guarantees that the boxes the candidate should be checking will not blind you and instead you’ll be able to clearly see what the person is proving they can bring to the role and whether that’s an ideal fit. Sometimes, traditional candidates break the mold of stereotypes, and that can be a big win for you and your company. Conducting behavioral interviews is one great way to push yourself to consider your candidates holistically, but we have 25 more tips on how to find better candidates.

See what we mean? We spent so much time pondering these nuggets of recruitment wisdom even after the commercial breaks were over and the game was back on, that we almost missed the big lesson on creating a winning culture from Julian Edelman’s epic fourth-quarter catch!

The big learning, though, is that you have to stay on top of your game to come out ahead, whether it’s in football or in recruiting. Don’t lose your lead, give up yardage, or blow your big chance to win the game of recruitment marketing.
