Holiday Hiring: Do’s and Don’ts

Holiday Hiring: Do's and Don'ts

In the last few months before the year comes to a close, many businesses – particularly retailers – are at their busiest. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season often dissuades recruiters from hiring, but there are a lot of reasons you should take advantage of the season as a great time to hire, whether it’s for part-time or full-time employees.

Here are some do’s and don’ts to ensure effective and efficient holiday hiring this season.

Do

  • Encourage employee referrals.
  • Promote job openings across your social media channels.
  • Update your Glassdoor profile so it includes the most current articles and news about your organization.
  • Revamp your careers page to appeal to your target demographic.
  • Build your employer brand image through holiday activities.
  • Be respectful of all holidays of all religions celebrated during the holiday season.
  • Encourage current and past employees as well as candidates to leave reviews on Glassdoor.
  • Showcase your company culture through photos, videos and your Why Work For Us section on your Glassdoor profile.

Don’t

  • Cater your recruiting or marketing strategies to one holiday.
  • Disregard candidates who do not fit your job description to a T.
  • Ignore reviews on Glassdoor. Take the time to respond to reviews, both positive and negative.
  • Overlook the importance of culture fit when recruiting candidates.
  • Be afraid to shift your recruitment marketing strategy.
  • Wait until the last minute to develop a recruiting strategy for the holiday season.
  • Forget that around ⅓ of college students graduate in the fall and are looking for jobs.
  • Be afraid to rethink your interview process to increase efficiency.
