Hey Recruiters, Here's 3 Hiring Tips You Can Learn From Facebook

I don't know about you, but I like to learn from the best. Sure, I may have a strange definition of “the best,” and I admit that I find inspiration in unconventional places - Ferris BuellerFrank Sinatra and Mr. T, to name a few. I’m not sure where this comes from (that’s a discussion for another time), but when I hear or see something inspiring, I am driven to share. Such was the case when a colleague of mine shared a recent case study featuring one of my company’s customers, Facebook.

In truth, I was not looking for inspiration when I clicked play on the video; I was reviewing it for messaging accuracy and to give my sign off on a new piece of content. It’s part of my job, and full disclosure, I work for Glassdoor. That, however, doesn't change the fact that Facebook is the best on many levels, and 90 seconds of video had me jotting down 3 hiring tips that every recruiter should take a moment to think about.

Hiring Tip 1: Recruiters like candidates who do their homework - so give them the tools to do it well.

These days, candidates have a wide range of information about your company at their fingertips. With a few keystrokes they are reading news articles about your company, your “about us” page and, most likely, reading reviews on Glassdoor. It makes sense, right? They want to know what it’s like to work for you, they want to prepare for their interview, and they are trying to decide if they are right for the job.

"When we engage with candidates; I like it when they’ve done their research, I like it when they’ve been able to read reviews, and learn about the company, and come to the table with informed questions."

- Lisa Clements, Sr. Director for Facebook Recruiting, Programs, Operations and Innovation

Tip: The only trick is what you do with this information. Do you know how many people are searching for your company on Glassdoor? If not, did you know that you can find out, for free? If people are searching for and reading about your brand on Glassdoor, doesn't it make sense that you should join the conversation? You can do that, too. Hiring Tip 2: Look at your candidate experience to help you improve and meet goals.

Have you ever been on a bad interview? Have you ever sat down, heard the first question come out of the interviewer’s mouth and decided right then and there that this job is wrong for you? A bad interview is painful for the candidate and makes a horrible brand impression on someone who likely walked into your building feeling good about your company. That experience and the collective experiences of your candidates are likely posted on Glassdoor, and you can use them to your advantage.

"That experience of what it was like when they came here’s tells me where we need to make tweaks in our process because we want Facebook to be a place where the best and brightest want to come and grow their careers, where they want to be part of this mission we have to connect the world."

- Lisa Clements, Sr. Director for Facebook Recruiting, Programs, Operations and Innovation

Tip: But, how can you know what happens in every interview? These days, interview panels are large, and you can’t be sure what happens in every meeting. What you

can do is keep an eye on the experience your candidates are having, learn from the experience and make changes where needed. And, you guessed it, you can do that for free on Glassdoor. This eBook offers great insight into interview reviews and their power in the recruiting process.

Hiring Tip 3: Choose partners who want to be in it with you

In business, we hire many partners (vendors, consultants, etc), and we all know some are great and others fall short. The key is to find a partner who cares about your business and your success. If you can find a symbiotic relationship, one where your success builds greater success for your partner (beyond revenue), you’ve found a partnership that will make a difference for your business.

"I feel like we’re in it together, Glassdoor acts more like a partner and a consultant, in making sure and recommending that the products we use are actually going to help us accomplish our objectives. It’s reassuring, it makes you feel like you’re not alone, somebody’s in it with you and is going to share in your success.”

- Lisa Clements, Sr. Director for Facebook Recruiting, Programs, Operations and Innovation

Tip: It’s clear Lisa loves Glassdoor, but this tip is not about Glassdoor (surprise!) - this tip is about you and your success. Find partners that care about you and your business. Find partners that you don’t want to dodge when you see their name pop up on your phone or in your email. Find partners that you want to talk to regularly. Find partners that make you better.
