Social media trends for recruiters to watch out for in 2018

As with anything technology-related, nothing stays the same for long these days. Social media is no exception. Social has always been a moveable feast. Over the years it has morphed into a much different animal than it was in its humble beginnings. In fact, it is now a beast – everybody and their dog are now glued to their social channels. Brands are getting savvier and smarter at producing content and messages that target us more precisely. So, what’s next for the phenomenon that is social media?

Here’s our look ahead to what’s in store on the social front for 2018 and what to look out for.

Live streaming

It’s no secret that video has become an increasingly major player in the digital world. The prediction that video will account for 80% of all internet traffic by 2019 is one of the most quoted statistics on the web – and, naturally, social is playing a massive role in video’s takeover of the internet.

A key part of social media’s role in all of this is live streaming. What was once a bit of a novelty and somewhat gimmicky has now become decidedly mainstream. Brands, ranging from global giants to the smallest of SMEs have cottoned on to the power of live steaming and its ability to grab the attention of audiences.

In 2018, the authenticity of a brand is perhaps not everything but it is super-important. Live streaming is great (amongst other things) at capturing that authenticity, shouting it from the rooftops, and sharing it with the world.

Augmented reality

If video is one unstoppable force, then augmented reality is certainly another. Of course, the latest iPhones incorporate technology that provide augmented reality experiences for users. It’s perfectly possible that by the end of 2018, we will see social media channels supporting filters that enable augmented reality to be possible.

Instagram Stories

Much of the appeal of Instagram Stories is similar to that of live steaming – it’s a great way to show authenticity, to go behind the scenes or to show off the personality of a brand.

But perhaps the biggest appeal is simply its popularity! Although, shamelessly ‘copied’ from Snapchat Stories, in only a year it has eclipsed its competitor completely. If it continues to be as popular in 2018 (and there’s absolutely no reason why it won’t be) then almost 50% of all Instagram users will be using Stories before the year is out.

On top of this, there are few better ways than Instagram Stories to stay at the top of people’s minds.

There are plenty of other trends to look out for in 2018. These are just the tip of the iceberg, but these are the trends that are set to be much more than bit-part-players in the social media story of 2018.
