StaffingTalk Goes Undercover at the Sales Ladder

[adapted from Slashdot.org posts by Shaper_pmp] "I'm the CEO of the company and my salary is less than $60K/year. My techs are paid hourly -- sometimes, during rough periods, they get paid more than I do. I manage to live just fine here in San Jose on a $50K/year salary."

Why Can't Programmers Make Their Software as Reliable as Bridges?

Staffing Talk

There are movements afoot to regulate the software industry, much like OSHA regulates workplace safety. Although motivation behind this comes from well-meaning individuals frustrated with software quality, it also comes from consultants whose self-interest overtakes common sense.

Vision Is Back In Fashion, Beware!

Staffing Talk

During the market crash a few years back, vision became a dirty word. Anyone claiming to have a vision for anything became suspect for having zero execution and negative income. Tactics, the short term ability to get stuff done and make money, ruled the day.

The Economics of Staffing

Staffing Talk

Slashdot has an exchange or rather a pissing contest going on about the merits of an innovative technical staffing service that promotes itself as "the way software gets done". I suspect a better tagline or at least a more appropriate one would be "the way arguments start". At the end of the day, a staffing company connects resources with users of those resources.

Giving Away Money Doesn't Build Trust

Staffing Talk

Sometimes I think recruiters listen to too much of the band,Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP), and their hit song 'Give It Away' because they (the recuiters) are constantly dumping their candy in the lobby, opening their kimono, and giving away their candidates, their crown jewels. I've blogged about this before and especially about the unsoundness of emailing resumes.

China Opens Clinic for Internet Addiction

Staffing Talk

Propaganda ran thick about equal access to healthcare when I lived in the Soviet Union in 1979. The reality of course was that it wasn't equal at all. If you had a lot of money to bribe your doctor, you got medicine. If you didn't you, well you just suffered. But it looks like the commies are catching up. they have exactly the kind of healthcare I need for me and my family

Applicant Portal Update

Staffing Talk

Applicant Portal quickly became a key part of our staffing software suite when we introduced it a few years back. The ability to both use it as an in-house kiosk and an internet application has made it a dual purpose time-saver and critical for the increasingly tight labor market. This summer we did a major upgrade, to version 2.0, and a lot of the work was done by an intern developer, Laura Stoerzinger, whom I've actually known since she was in kindergarten.

Hiring Is Obsolete

Staffing Talk

It's much smarter to hire 20-year-olds than 30-year-olds. They're cheaper, they don't come with baggage (most of the time) and they tend to make more of a community out of the workplace. They also take to newer technologies faster, and if you make money innovating like TempWorks does then you need the new ideas those young people bring in. Paul Graham, one of my favorite essayists , starts with these same ideas and concludes that hiring is becoming obsolete
